if you're taking selis with your phone, the reason for you looking worse in a picture is the focal length. faces look super weird and long with very small focal lengths which warps.

Look at the picture. See how crappy she looks on the very short focal length and how good she looks comparatively on the long end? And this is 14mm pretty much the shortest you'll get on a professional camera. But phones go lower than that cause their lenses and sensors are tiny.
For referenc: the human eye roughly has a focal length of 40-50mm
Things feel more real in person.
