What was the first game that could be played online with internet?

I know Doom has online multiplayer with internet, which was released in December 1993.

You had online multiplayer games, which required you to email your turn to your opponent and the game on both sides would act based on the emailed turns.

There was also a manual version where you write your turn on a sheet of paper and literaly mail it with your local postman to an opponent, this concept was invented in the early 1960s. (used mainly for boardgames)

The first video game i could find which used a play by e-mail system, was Empire from 1977.

The whole play by email system became popular in 1990... +/- 5 years Most games on wikipedia were published between 1985 and 1999.

Probably with the increased number of PCs with internet connection in private households.

First email was sent in 1971, and the military only usage of the internet ended in 1970 (according to the german wiki).

There were many people playing video games in an academic setting, Games like Tennis for Two were played on the big professional pcs before any private household had acces computer

Internet wasn't open to general public before very late 80s.

It says a game from 1984. Internet wasn't open to public back then.
