I want to play a video game, but I'm not sure what system I should play it on. What would you do?

If you got a good enough pc then I'd probably pick that as option.
Xbox controller on pc (as in your options) works good.
8Bitdo controllers also work good and are cheaper then Xbox and PS controllers.
Many of the newer 8Bitdo controllers have Hall effect sticks which means they are unlikely to get stick drift and tend to last longer.

If pc is not good enough and not wanting to spend on new pc or upgrades.
Then probably a PS5 or Nintendo Switch.

If you are interested in getting a Nintendo Switch, you should know that Nintendo will release a sequel, a Switch 2 sometime this spring/summer.
So probably wait for the new one instead of buying the current version (unless you already have it).

Don't buy added hardware just use your laptop with xbox app.

Pc makes the most sense. You can play literally any game and usually for cheaper.
