These are the countries I've visited, along with 47 of the 50 US States...
In the USA we fly or drive. There are trains and bus services, but they are not popular. Cruise ship travel is popular in the USA, and I enjoy relaxing at sea. While traveling aboard use trains and buses, as well as taking advantage of discount airlines. I also take cruises. I typically pay with credit cards or by using ATMs. The days of travelers checks are long gone and with ATMs there is no reason to carry large amounts of cash.
If time is important then fly. Yes, the airports are a hassle, but a bus ride from Sofia Bulgaria to Athens Greece would have taken me 10 hours, while a direct flight took under 1 hour. Even counting time spent in both airports, I saved 6 hours in travel time, which got me into Athens at lunch time and with ample time to check into my hotel and relax before going out for the evening.
I prefer to stay at the smaller local hotels. I like to say that I'm the only guest speaking English then I'm in the right place! You should also consider hostels, some of which have small private rooms. Otherwise sleeping in the dorm is a great way to meet new and (hopefully) interesting people, which I feel is part of the traveling experience.
The best time to travel is in the off season when there are fewer crowds and prices are typically lower. I prefer traveling in May and September as the weather is usually still nice in most regions. In the USA July and August are the busiest months. The brats are out of school, so most families take their vacations during those months. Anywhere you that might imagine visiting, a million Americans will already be there!
Good luck with your travel plans.

I do adore Europe, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time there in south east Asia and all over the America’s. I’ve always wanted to visit Iceland, New Zealand and Japan.
