Well, "On the Beach", Nevile Shute's 1957 end-of-the-world novel that takes place primarily in a submarine and Australia, is rather upsetting, but it was made into an excellent 1959 movie and remade in 2000 as an Australian TV mini-series.

No. My book would get wet! The only thing i really like at the beach is swimming. I strongly dislike the sand cuz it gets everywhere and i have no use for it. So i swim to wash away the sand! But i don’t have any waterproof books. So no books at the beach for me!

I do, or at the pool. Just don't do it if getting sleepy reading and fall asleep unless under umbrella. Suntan lotion runs out and next thing you know it's burn time.
