You need the screen to be where you can easily see it without looking down to where you set your phone. That would require that you have a device to hold it on the side of the dash and to keep it from sliding. Also, most phones are too small to see well compared to built in GPS systems.

I rather use my phone. I can use my data or wifi to get directions and then turn off my data. with location turned on and the directions will still work without internet. if my phone is low on battery i can always use the car to charge it or a power bank. why spend extra money

No, use Google maps on your phone, and turn on the voice. You rarely even need to look at your phone.

Not sure. I was in a bad accident and not really clear. He told me to turn on my phones location and then said never mind he found me narrowing down the cell towers.

The mobile maps is very distracting. You constantly look in the small screen and on the road. The focus keeps on shifting between the two. Not good for driving.

Better to have the GPS in the infotainment system. Even that system is distracting while driving, but it is definitely better than the smartphone's.

I hate GPS systems in cars. Many if them are out of date and often incorrect. Give me Google Maps on my phone... wherever I am.

Many years ago, before cellphones were commonplace and Google maps didn't exist, Magellan was in many rental cars, and it was useful when driving in an area you didn't know. But that's history now.

Sorry, didn't mean to be snarky. There's just no need. Phone maps are as good as anything in the car. PLUS... most of the rental fleet is new which means they have Apple Car Play and/or Android Auto. So your phone stuff ends up on the car's screen. Paying for GPS is just that: giving the rental car money. And before they tell you that their GPS will work where your phone doesn't, with few exceptions, they're working with the same coverage areas and service.
