I've been flying now since I was 5.

My advice is hard shell. Yes, you lose a little space and it is more expensive. BUT... you make up for it by knowing that your luggage is the right size (if it's over dimension, they're going to charge you for it) and it's way easy to pack too much in a soft bag and thus incur an overweight charge. Go hard shell and you won't regret it.

Also, think about packing a box and having the post office ship it. Usually cheaper than a bag on a plane.
