Always maintain the zone of safety. A lot of people, at least in my neck of the woods on the east coast, do not do this. It is extremely crucial especially during rush hour. Always maintain a good safe distance from the driver in front of you to avoid any possible accidents from an idiot out there, and to allow others a space to change lanes in a crowded situation like that.

DO NOT TAILGATE. Something else a lot of people don't know is that tailgating is illegal and highly dangerous. Possibly more than speeding. You will have asshole drivers out there who will tailgate you while you all are moving at high speed, creating a dangerous situation. The reason tailgating is so dangerous is because you have no idea if the person in front of you will all of a sudden break down in the middle of the road, hit an animal and come to a stop, or have to come to a stop for any other reason. And if you hit them you will be at fault.

Stay off the left lane if you aren't going to move fast. An enormous number of people actually don't know that the left lane is for faster traffic, but slower drivers will still use it and hold up the others who are trying to move faster. If you want to move slower that's perfectly okay but stay in the right lanes.

Don't rush. It doesn't save much time to keep changing lanes to try to go a little faster, but it increase the risk a lot.
