I don’t book hotels very often but I usually book hotels by Hilton. Because I have the app and I gain points whenever I book with them, then I can use my points in the future.
I got a hotel a couple weeks ago and I was able to save $100 from using my points.
I think every hotel chain does something similar.

to answer the original question, Id assume it’s cheaper through hotel booking apps.

I find booking directly on the hotel's own website is usually the least expensive option. You can also join their rewards programs which can sometimes give you even better rates or perks, even if you never accumulate enough points for free nights. If you have AAA, be sure to check for special rates or offers.
