What would you do if you had 8 days holidays and you were in China?

I have been there quite a few times. My favorite memory was walking the Great Wall at Mutianyu which is North East of Beijing. You can rent a van and an English speaking guide. For us it was a husband and wife, he drove their van and she spoke English. It was $110 all in for the day plus we tipped. It probably has gone up now so perhaps $200. That section of the wall was wonderful to walk as it was quiet and not many people compared to Badaling where most people go and I have gone to that section two or three times. Its worth a trip as well. Don’t miss the Forbidden City in Beijing either.

Xian has the Terracotta Army which is not to be missed. Its a city in more central China and that is the major attraction although they have the largest intact city wall, a large Drum Tower and some good food.

Shanghai is a big bustling city that is a must do just because its so important but there isn’t that much of interest there. Suzhou is a day trip away from Shanghai which is a cool little town that is known as the Venice of China. It is closer to rural China in look and feel than the major cities and it is very interesting.

Bring near empty suit cases and buy a lot there. You will have silk bedding, clothes, beautiful vases, some jade and more.

Don’t get scammed by having people pull you into a teahouse for a tasting ceremony as it can cost $800 without you realizing it.

I do live in Shanghai and before Shanghai, I lived in Suzhou for years. I traveled to Beijing this January.

I am thinking about Yunnan province next.

I don’t know when you traveled to Suzhou but I lived there in 2019-2023 and it’s grown into a majestic city of 13 million people, half of the size of Shanghai and 6th richest city in China after Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong. And Suzhou.

Oh okey , you used to not need any Visa to HK if you were on the mainland , that may be country dependent , but certainly for Australia it was fine , that may have changed , its been a while.

One of them is to finish walking the entire end-to-end stretch of the Great Wall.

My husband & I attempted it many years ago but we weren't allowed in certain sections.

I'd start in Shanghai, spend a day or two there, take a high speed train to Beijing, spend a few days there, then a high speed train to Hong Kong to finish up the week, ending it with dinner at The Peak Restaurant, overlooking the Harbour.
