Considering a Trip to Russia as a Black American Woman?

Hi everyone! I’m a 19-year-old Black woman from the US who’s thinking of spending a few weeks in Russia over the summer. I know that US media can portray Russia in a particular way, so it’s hard to find information that feels completely unbiased. I’d really love to hear from people who’ve actually been there or know what it’s like, especially as a Black person or as a foreigner.

I want to be prepared for what to expect in terms of how I might be treated. I’m also a bit curvier than the average person, so I’m wondering if I’d need to dress more conservatively to avoid extra attention. If anyone has advice on how to fit in or avoid standing out too much, I’d love to hear it.

Are there any particular behaviors or mannerisms I should avoid? I don’t want to accidentally bring too much “Americanness” that could make me uncomfortable or draw unwanted attention. Also, are there any cultural or social norms I should be especially aware of?

I’d appreciate any honest advice on the good, the bad, and everything in between. Thanks so much for any insights or tips you’re willing to share!
