So I started talking to this girl in China and we’ve hit it off for a couple of weeks on vacation. We still talked after but the day before Chinese new year she asked for a red envelope. I asked what is it and she sent me a link showing that it’s customary that older folks and bosses give them to their children/employees. I asked her about this and said that I’m not comfortable sending her money due to only knowing her for two weeks and how other people say that it’s not customary to send to potential romantic partners. She said it’s not about money and she proceeded to tell me “consider that I didn’t say anything about this.” Is this customary and am I overreacting or is she backpedaling.

Sever that contact at once. Nice attempt to scam you and to get some funds out of you.

Have you even seen that lady or did you only text chatting? In that case you are probably the victim of a ring that tries to extort money from potential victims. Once they have you under control, they will be asking you more and more funds and there will be no end to it.

I don't think this is a serious "relationship" you let yourself in. Step back and cut all the contacts. Those are people that know how to make the best out of people that are desperate enough to try to find romance elsewhere than in their own home country.
