That's all well and good, provided everyone who hears the former also hears the latter (that was the point of the Fairness Doctrine, iirc). That's not what happens on social media, which only amplifies things you already like.

Me, I'd require social media sites ensure that every recipient of fake news receive and acknowledge receiving the associated fact check. They don't have to read it, if they don't want to, but at least they know they're being wilfully misinformed.

I see two approaches to fixing that problem:
1. Stop people from being able to tell the lies
2. Ensure everyone who ears the lies also hears the truth

My preference is for number 2, and I'm sure it's technically feasible (there's no way Twitter doesn't keep track of exactly who has seen what posts). It may be slightly annoying for people who want to be lied to, but since they see the original (assuming it's not illegal content), it's also not censorship.

I don't see it that way. I can go up to someone on the street and say whatever I want and there doesn't have to be a disclaimer. A public square should be just as free for speech as a street corner.

By the way I never heard those of rumors such as Ukraine not having its own language. What you hear ultimately comes down to who you follow on that website and what the algorithm feeds you. If you want citizens to be well informed, teach them critical thinking skills in public schools.

As to your public square analogy, technology has filled the square with people with bullhorns, and that's going to lead to a square empty of reasonable people. That's not a good thing for society (it's also the reason the "freedom convoy" is having eggs thrown at it).
