Why so many shark attacks?

When the movie Jaws came out in the 70s there was widespread fear for going in the ocean. There was only a handful of shark attacks against human every year. Now there are many attacks every day.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

Nobody stated the obvious. Do gooders have made seal hunting illegal. Now you see hundreds of seals sunning themselves on rock formations or on sandbars just ringing the dinner bell for sharks.

It is said that sharks are moving closer to shore because of changes in water temperature due to climate change. That may be true, but if we look at the statistics, taking into account the world's population, we find...

From 2012 to 2022, there was an average of 12.6 unprovoked shark attacks per billion people on earth, and from 1950 to 1960 the number was 11.8—not much of a difference.

With the advent of social media and 24-hour news, there is a trend toward more reporting of shark attacks, compared to years ago, and that is another factor that affects peoples' perception that shark attacks are getting more common.

As others have said, the ocean is the shark's home, and when we humans venture into it, we should understand the risk.

I am sure they were just as hungry 50 years ago. i can remember rarely seeing helicopters patrolling the shoreline looking for sharks when I was a kid. Now it happens all the time and most of the time the actually see a shark.

I think we hear about them more with technology such as the internet bringing us instantaneous news that we can't escape. It would have been odd in the 70s to read in your local newspaper about a shark attack on a swimmer in South Africa.

I think people travel a lot more now than they did in the 70s. I was an 80s child and most of the kids I knew had never left the state they lived in or traveled father than Grandma's house. I think there are likely more beach goers than in the past.

I wonder if that statistic took into account the human population growth, the shark population growth, the human:shark Rato ratio, the percentage of attacks per capita, etc. It sounds like another scare tactic by the global elites.

@exitseven yeah of course because a human invading another humans space is an attack. People go into the ocean and aren’t even realistic of what could be around them. It goes to show humans take advantage of nature on a regular basis

The movie jaws led to mass persecution of sharks but now they're protected in most western areas so numbers are recovering. But at the same time we're seeing more people taking up water sports.

Even here in the uk where shark attacks are rare we're seeing a huge increase in kayakers and paddle boarders heading into areas rarely visited by swimmers. I know of one kayak that was nibbled by a Mako close in shore and one was spotted killing a seal from some cliffs. I've personally seen a thresher shark hit a mackerel shoal very close to a popular tourist beach.
It stands to reason it's only a matter of time before we have a fatality.

Yes but having thousands of seals in close proximity to where humans go swimming is a recipe for disaster

~10 fatal shark attacks worldwide is hardly a disaster on any metric.

I said fatal. A bite isn't a fatal injury most of the time. Especially close to shore, you're seeing smaller sharks in murky water getting confused. There were 5 fatal shark bites in 2022 WORLDWIDE.

According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, there is a record of 9 shark incidents in 2022 as of January 2023.

That number seems pretty low to me.
