The term Bombogenesis means the barometric pressure drops suddenly which causes hurricane force winds and blizzard conditions. I never heard this term until two or 3 years ago,
Did meteorologists just make this up because it sounded cool?

"Beaver moon" still has me scratching my head. I've been on this earth for 25 years, probably been fully aware since around 5ish but have never heard of a "Beaver moon" until this year. I think they do make things up
@Beckybooboo There must be a joke in there someplace.
🤦 I was actually expecting jokes on here when it was all over the news, "a beautiful beaver moon tonight", 'get out there tonight and enjoy the wonderful sight of the beaver moon". "Nothing like seeing a beaver'! It's a November full moon. That's it!
Those weather guys are just making up more terms to make the weather sound worse then it is.

Technically ALL words are “made up”.
This is the first i’m learning that word, but i had heard “bomb cyclone” before. Given the proper context, i probably could have figured it out.
Our understanding of our world is ever expanding. So it’s inevitable that new words will be developed to describe things that we didn’t previously understand. I’ll take technical jargon over silly slang all day everyday. Some of the dumb sh*t kids are saying now makes me cringe so hard that i regret adopting the slang that became common in my youth.
I know "bomb cyclones" and that's because a few of them can just pop-up over the Gulf of Mexico and be like SURPRISE MUTHAFUCKA!!
but yeah... "bombogenesis" sounds like one of those terms that someone used once some decades ago... so, some metereologist of today was like "yeah... I'll just say it again to get some buzzwordy attention on socials...
Pretty much all words are ultimately made-up words, but it's a real word, all right: Bombogenesis, or "bomb cyclone," occurs when a mid-latitude storm's central pressure drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours (or $\approx$17.8mb at NYC latitude), signaling rapid, explosive intensification. Often occurring in winter, it happens when cold air meets warm ocean waters, leading to high winds and heavy precipitation. NOAA's National Ocean Service (. gov)
Nowadays people are inventing new words. It's ridiculous!!
Chucky Schumer said the word "Trumpisim" the other day. That's not a real word! Come on!!
But you can Google it and find out about it.
The word sounds like a really bad, have to wipe for at least 10 minutes, ass stretching shit that's difficult to mentally recover from.
Wasn't every word a made up term at some point?
The earliest known use of the noun bombogenesis is in the 1980s.
Oxford English Dictionary (OED)'s earliest evidence for bombogenesis is from 1989, in the writing of M. E. Adams.
Yes, meteorologists make up new words all the time. In fact the only thing you need to do to get a new word into the dictionary is to get enough people to use it.
Never heard of it, but that doesn’t mean anything. 🤓
No, it's a real meteorological term. So are "bomb cyclone" and "polar vortex".
Interesting. I've never heard of that term.
probably. Gotta keep that fear mongering up.
