Why would Donald Trump threaten to harm the negotiators?

I thought Trump campaigned for peace and now he is threatening the negnegotiators who want to workout a peace deal with him. And JD Vance is still standing there looking weak alongside Trump.

Iran sent their negotiators and Trump is talking about war and invading other countries still.

@DryGermanGuy We are taking about a regime that is deeply unpopular. Many Iranians internally and externally want it removed. Reza Pahlavi would be a good interim leader. I have a friend who lives in the country and he was telling me about it's economic collapse. It wouldn't even have to be an air campaign alone due to internal forces that are already assassinating IRGC figured. Trump simply has a obsession with deals. It's detrimental in a conflict like this.

Yes, of course the Mullah regime is deeply unpopular and large parts of the population would support a regime change. The problem is that thousands of opposition people, including many leaders, have already been killed by the regime. The perfect time to piggyback on that uprising has already come and gone.

@DryGermanGuy even if I accept regime change is unlikely (its not a stated war goal by the US), this is the type of regime that will jump on anything it sees as weakness. The ceasefire was a mistake, extending it was worse, making threats while extending it even worse. They see Trump as a weak and indecisive leader and that makes them more hardine. What is needed is continued aggression and not endless and pointless negotiations. I am certain after further destruction and economic disaster their control over their own nation will collapse. Trump made a serious strategic mistake by taking his foot off the pedal.

I'm afraid you are far too optimistic here. Even a completely fucked-up and occupied third-world nation like Afghanistan managed to keep clandestine anti-Western structures and activities. And Iran is 50 times better organized. Whatever Americans can think of, they have already prepared against that.

@DryGermanGuy I'm not really talking about regime change, though I'd argue it's preferable and there are figures offering to be interim leaders like Reza Pahlavi. What I'm talking about is the folly of talks. Trump is less likely to achieve his goals by appeasement or discussion than he is by bringing the nation to the brink and on its knees. Once the regime lacks resources or financing, has an further agitated population, it's more likely to make concessions.

There is something ironic about starting an illegal war, being able to pursue it, being unable to pursue it, and then demanding a peace prize on top of it. I'm starting to think that Trump is becoming psychotic. He certainly seems to be borderline delusional.

Trump thinks that threatening others makes them afraid of him, and as a result of that, they will do what he wants. This is a very emergent example of his rapidly failing judgment. Believing these things about professional negotiators is naive and obtuse. Negotiators are used to hostility and to being threatened in one way or another. They are extremely resilient, intelligent, and resourceful people. Threatening them is a stupid thing to do, but then again, nobody has ever accused Trump of being smart.

The lesson here is that you get who and what you voted for.
