I had an appointment at the counseling center at my school on Thursday, and basically, I'm starting therapy.

I've had a lot of problems with anxiety for about 10 years now, and it's gotten kind of out of control. Since I don't know how to deal with it on my own, I finally decided to get help. It's something that I've wanted to do for a few years, but my mom was always against it.

She doesn't know that I'm seeing a psychologist now. No one does, actually. I know I'm old enough to make my own decisions (I'm 19), but she's still my mom. She wouldn't be happy to hear that I'm in therapy, but I feel like I'm lying to her.

Should I tell her the truth? Or maybe I should hold off on telling her for a little while. . .I really don't know.

If she's not going to support you in your fight to be happier, then don't tell her. What you're doing is incredibly courageous and mature, to actually recognize you need help, and seek it. The last thing you need is your mom badgering you and making you feel terrible about it. If anything, she's one of your problems I bet.

Don't tell her. Also, it isn't lying if she hasn't asked you if you're seeing a therapist. And if she does, just say no. Your happiness is more important than her screwed up wishes. I really can't understand why she wouldn't want you to get help, it's beyond me. Do you know why?

And yes, you're an adult now. So, think of this as your first step in being an adult. Your mom no longer has to know everything about you. : )

Question Asker That's too funny, I was always "mommy's little girl" and now my first step into adulthood is going against her wishes and not telling her about it. Maybe next time I'll piss off my dad haha

She doesn't want me to get help because she "doesn't believe in psychology." She thinks it's for people with more severe disorders like schizophrenia, or people who were abused. She told me anxiety disorders come from within a person, so they can get over it on their own. - 2 months ago
Answerer Well, clearly you're an example of "not getting over it on her own". Right? Everyone needs help sometimes. - 2 months ago
