Well, it's not that recent since I've been married for a while now, but my wife and I had a period of separation during engagement - I was taking out my frustrations at the time by neglecting her, and she would react by getting hyper controlling. Arguments were every night and she often went to bed in tears.
We were both tired and almost done, but we decided to take a step back and basically live as roommates for some months - separate rooms, cordial interactions but nothing more than that.
After some six months like that we agreed that we either tried again or I move out (her place) - taking it easy and baby steps, but work steadily towards it.
It worked, I got into a better mental headspace and she too worked on her issues, and now we've been happily married for two years.

we didn't "break-up"
but we did conclude that our paths and plans were going to go in very different directions
would have been unfair for either to give up and sacrifice that much
