A guy I talk too will send me ha ha or lol all by its self and I just end the conversation but does he want it to end or does he just not know what to say?

Most likely, he has nothing to say back but doesn't want to end the conversation or doesn't want to seem rude for not saying anything back. So he's just acknowledging what you said and hoping you'll respond back if he doesn't want to end the conversation.
