How to tell I like him?

So we had our lunch yesterday, I asked what he thought. He agreed it was good and fun. However, we didn't talk on the bus on the way back. How do I tell him I like him? Like slowly give hints etc. Is it smart to say did he think of it as just a hangout or date?
