Why would someone block you and a few days later unblock you despite no arguments?

I became very close to a guy. We dated unofficially. He had a lot of personal issues and he opened up to me about them. We could literally talk about anything. He introduced me to his daughter as I was a good influence on her - his words. He also admitted we had a deep connection and we were more than friends. He said numerous times he couldn't imagine his life without me in it. However, we were never official.
This happened over 3 months. We spoke every day, saw each other all the time. It seemed so perfect. We both knew he wasn't in the best place for anything serious and I didn't pressure him. I was happy how things were.
However out of the blue he started cancelling, not chatting as much. Finally admitted he was talking to someone else and he just wanted friendship with me. I said Not at the moment and said how hurt I was.
That was a few months ago. Since then, we have had a couple of general texts. One where he said that the girl was out of his life. He started opening up again. We never met up and I never pressured him too. I just thought in time maybe we would have some kind of contact. However despite there been no argument, he blocked me on Facebook. Ignored my text asking how he was feeling ( he had started counselling). I put it down to him been back with this girl and not wanting to hurt me. Although It hurt, I accepted it.
However a week later, I am unblocked. He still has my number in his phone (i know this from WhatsApp) - and he never deleted my number. My question is why would he unblock me? or why did he block me in the first place when he could have just unfriended me? Does he miss me? Do people think he will reach out?
