I think honestly he has self esteem issues, probably he sees himself as inferior compared to you and to your achievements, so he refuges himself behind a barrier made of judgements and excuses. He probably feels deluded or judged by everyone for what he is.
I think sincerely you should talk to him, maybe to comprehend really why he’s like that… maybe making him comprehend no one is judging him and he has value for what he does himself.
Maybe you two are not a good fit?
