I think probably he’s got a lot of insecurities. He probably values himself very low and tends to hide his sentiments, maybe he has difficulties in expressing them. He likes you but he kept his appreciation hidden in order not to harm himself, he probably took his long time to tell you that.

it means he is insecure bc most guys like to act tough n think showing our feelings makes us seem/ feel weak

The feelings are genuine but I guess he has had a history of being shamed for expressing himself and been told that he will seen "less of a man" if he says what he feels.
