How much does television influence who we find attractive because I now want a Mexican girlfriend after watching breaking bad again?

I finished rewatching breaking bad a couple of weeks ago and one of the main characters has a girlfriend named Andrea who is Mexican. Now, I want a Mexican girlfriend too more than ever before.

Lots, actually. It's why accurate representation (and not just default white) is important.

The human brain is a complex machine trained to see patterns and recognizing human faces is one of the quickest to form. If you're only ever surrounded by white features, that makes a bias on an unconscious level. Non-white features are not as easily recognizable, which can cause some trouble in seeing them as attractive - nevermind human.

By exposing ourselves to faces and features of diverse peoples, we help our brain connect to human features rather than specific racial ones.

It's why there's such a problem with racial bias in AI. Most of the data being fed to these programs is white, but the reality is that the world is much more diverse than that.

Hell, even looking at the Western genre - the white cowboy was a myth. The Wild West had Spanish descent vaqueros, US bukaroos who took on Spanish cattle herding traditions, Black cowboys who made up 25% of the cattle driving industry, and Indigenous people who were systematically made victims of genocide at the hands of the early US army.

But if you ask people today, John Wayne and the white cowboy are what they'd assume lived in that time period.

So, yeah. Representation in TV is important.

Sometimes it's the limited type of women we grow up around that influences us to think that we need to date our own race. Then occasionally we see a White guy with a woman of a different race on tv or wherever and a lightbulb goes off like "Fuck, I want that chick so bad." Maybe some White guys are meant to be with other races.
