Why do people lie?

I brought up a question to my boyfriend brother about a Facebook page saying my boyfriend has a wife. My friend showed me the page of the girl that says he’s married to her. Peoplw told me to block the page and that it was fake. I found out it is actually his wife and I discovered that he is truly married. Why would they tell me it’s a fake page if I ask? Then certain people who ask actually get told it’s a fake page and some people they are telling it’s his wife.
