Why do people lie?

It fucking hurts. What’s so hard about being honest? White lies are something else but purposefully hiding bad shit? Disgusting.

Yes, if people lie to you, it hurts, but don't forget that everyone lie. No one has never lied before. However, there are good and bad reasons why people lie to you and to themselves.

Why people lie:
1:People lie because they are ashamed of what they did or didn't do and they don't want to come clean with it (telling the truth). They feel embarrassed, ashamed or guilt.

2: People lie because they are afraid of what other people will think of them, that's why they tell you something else. People will see you as a cool guy, succesful, status, macho, tough guy in a positive way of course etc.

3: People lie to fit in. Example: If everyone of your friends had sex and you don't, you feel less, you feel like there's something wrong with you. That's why you tell your friend you've also had sex with someone, while you actually are a virgin (which isn't bad though), but you feel like a lone wolf, because you are the only one that didn't has sex, and everyone you know did had sex. Another example is that you are ashamed that you don't have a job, so you tell your friend you have a job.

4: People lie because they think they can get away with it, they are pride people (their pride is on the line if they tell you the truth). They feel superior.

5: Status, if they tell you the truth, it can damage their status or image (if you are a lawyer, doctor, dentist, businessman etc).

6: People lie so they don't have to deal with someone else's problems.

7: (Mental) problems (being narcissistic, pathological liar, pseudologia phantastica)

8: People don't want to tell the truth because they are afraid of the truth or anyone knowing the truth and possibly use his/her weakness (es) against you.

8: People lie because they don't want to hurt others (white lie).
Example: Getting rejected by your crush, your crush said that they have a boyfriend/girlfriend, so they don't hurt your feelings, while in most cases it's just a lie (white lie). In other situations, lying can eventually hurt people, so it's better to tell the truth. If you lie, you can break someone's trust for you and/or his/her heart.

9: People lie to avoid trouble.

10: People lie because it's easy.

11: People lie to make their life easier

12: Honesty doesn't pay (not always that is)

13: People lie because they are jealous (also know as Othello syndrome).

14: People are afraid to be vulnerable (to be authentic). Society has taught us that being vulnerable is a weakness, especially if you are a man. Men are not allowed to cry, we have to be strong. People are afraid to be vulnerable, because people can use their weakness (es) against him/her. People are afraid they get rejected by people if they show their true self.

Because the truth is harder and lying is easier. In this scenario, which is better, you had money to get someone a gift they wanted but you saw something you wanted instead, so you bought that. When you go back, you say I'm sorry they ran out. It's a selfish motive but it was easier. In another senario, let's say a woman found a guy and had sex with them, it's easier for her to say nothing and even further to say she was with her friends that night and all her friends of course agree that's where she was. It's a terrible terrible terrible thing but it's an easy out. It's less trouble for the person and even though it's wrong they still do it... But it's worse to lie, it's better to stand firmly on your own beliefs and be honest, faithful and true. That's how every good relationship should be. Just because lying is easier does not make it right or an excuse for anyone to use. While there are some minor exceptions I believe that, lies =selfishness
Plain and simple, if you can't respect a person enough to tell them the truth then that kind of makes you a selfish person. I probably will eat my words later by another that comments on this post... But I feel that while it's an extreme statement, I think there is some truth to it

You’d be very surprised by just how much some people lie! Some do it because they are unable to stop lying; some do it to get away with what they’re hiding (typically involves some form of addiction: need for other girls (sex), alcohol, spending problems, gambling and drugs etc.). It really hurts a lot especially when it’s from someone you love and they’re willing to lie to you.

People usually lie to make themselves look better to others. Or they lie to make their partner happy in the short term. Of course it’s not very smart because everyone finds out the truth eventually.

1. Because they can.

2. Because being honest can end up getting yourself in a more worse situation than being honest at times. Have you evee been hobest with someone and then they end up getting pissed at you for it? If so then you know what I'm talking about.

3. It's easier to lie than to tell try truth because of what I said on point #2. If a person thinks they can actually get away with a lie that'll make their lives easier then it's likely they're going to go for the lie. Humans are selfish by nature, so it's typically likely they'll put thier own sake first before someone else's. The brain always seeks the most easist and efficient solution when it comes to dealing with things, it's just plain pshychology. Unfortunately lying tends to be the easy way out, so it happens a lot.

unfortunately there is no good reason i can give you. People do it because they can, they do it to make them selves look better. they do it to protect peoples feelings. They do it to hurt, and harm people, or they just do it because for them the lie is easier.

1). Because they are afraid of the truth or anyone knowing the truth, so they want to hide it.
2). They want to trick someone to gain something from them.
