I think it's to gauge your experience with dating and how much you commit to people when you're dating them. Like if you've dated 6 guys in the past two years, that's a red flag as a guy because it means you don't commit to partners or you pick shitty partners to date and that will mean drama later.

Alternatively he just wants to know how many guys you've slept with and he's trying to be sly about it like Tinder doesn't exist.

I think most likely yes. I can't think of much any other reason why he would ask that question if he wasn't trying to figure out compatibility or to judge you by his standards
