It's a dumb rule in my opinion.

It's based on consequences in the workplace that only the simple minded are subject to.

Intelligent people can date, break up, or observe others doing so, and not be disruptive or rude about it at work.

The bar for human interaction these days is very low, we should be critical of stupidity, and are instead critical of offending or enabling the stupid.

It could apply to that. But it’s more than that. It means you shouldn’t cause problems where you find yourself hanging out a lot. Such as places like work, your parents’ home, etc. Such behavior could end up backfiring in you.

Yes, a perfect application. Learn your vulgar truisms such as "don't shit where you eat", and "that dog won't hunt". Valuable life lessons developed since the early days before fire or the wheel. Coding is also important but not everything. Not often we see such a philosophical question on GAG.

It means a lot of things, one of which is that you shouldn’t date coworkers. “Don’t shit where you eat” just means “keep parts of your life separated” in general.
