A handwritten letter formally mailed to her home and received by 2/12 with a seal on the back. A Hallmark Gold seal would be funny to me. Nothing Fancy but dated Valentine #1: A statement of feeling ground in critical logic that communicate warmth and affection... This eliminates "Needy" overtones.
Next year Valentines #2...

What Girls & Guys Said
Nothing. I made the mistake of getting a girl I had just met, something for v-day because I thought it would be ok, but, nope.
DON'T DO IT.
If she breaks up with you because of it.

Something homemade and/or practical. Or just not start the habit of giving stuff for valentines day as random gifts are better.10
What is she interested in? Get her something associated with that.10

What does she like?
Don't go for the things that she's counting on- it ruins the moment because she's expecting it. Surprise her. Remember the little things. It may not be a gift, but an experience.
I was close friends with a girl who loved astronomy and one time talked with me about how she was a little girl and watching the moon and stars for hours with a handheld telescope. She mentioned she lost the telescope when she was 10 years old. It was a short conversation but I remembered it.
Months pass by. I buy her a gift for a special occasion. She was expecting something "showy" or "romantic". No- I got her a nice, little handheld telescope. She burst out crying when she opened the gift- not because it was grand or showy- but because it made her feel like a little girl again.
Think, Coach. Think.
Yeah that's awesome and yes I am thinking about things like that.
