because birth control didn't exist in the past, men who had sex could pass on their genes to the next generation, men who couldn't died as virgins.

polygamy was common in the past because only a few selected men were seen as attractive and fit the long list of requirements women had for them. as long as a woman wasn't promiscuous which would be damn near impossible she was bound to end up passing on her genes to the next generation.
