Without searching for a ring on the finger or asking around. What I mean is asking himself
I really have to write a MyTake on this.
There's a technique I have used rather successfully. I am not sure what to call it, but it works like this...
When you want to INDIRECTLY find out if another person is married/involved, you get involved in a conversation and ask the person what they think. But then you ask "Well what does your spouse think about that?"
The person will usually then answer one of 2 ways:
1. "He/She thinks..."
>>> So the person is taken.
2. "I don't have a spouse, but my girlfriend/boyfriend thinks..."
>>> So the person is taken.
3. "Oh, I'm not with anyone right now."
>>> So the person is available.
Let's try it out...
You see your doctor and talk about a gynecological issue. For instance, talk about being worried about eventually going through menopause and ask his feelings about taking black cohosh to combat symptoms. After he answers, then ask if his wife worries about her own eventual menopause and what does he think she'll do to combat the symptoms.
That's an innocent question and, in industry, you are doing "benchmarking" - finding out what others are doing. BUT, in reality, you are really asking him: "Are you married?"
See how that works?
You make the assumption that the person is NOT available - that is, married or has a boyfriend/girlfriend - and then have them tell you if they are taken by indirectly asking about their assumed spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend.

Pretend to get a phone call like you are going to a wedding soon and speak in front of him like "yea just get the one you like, it's your wedding, I have to go I'm in the middle of a doctor's appointment, I'll call you back" then hang up and make a comment, " sorry a friend is getting married, oof weddings seem like a lot of work" fish it out of him lol
I found out my doctor was going on a date with a woman indirectly when I noticed he was dressed different and I randomly said you look different today that's when he told me he was meeting up with this girl and he was also meeting her aunt.
You realise if you are asking this question in the hope he and you can be together you will likely be wasting your time as doctors cannot legally date patients if you are his patient.

Get to the damned point and just ask if he's married or has a girlfriend.
I guess you could say - Not wearing your wedding ring today? He might say not married or some other story.
Ask if he's single.
