He is interested but?

It has been a month since I started seeing him daily on the train. One day, he sat next to me without saying anything while I had my headphones on. I assumed he was just another passenger until he asked about the air conditioning. We had a brief conversation, but he didn't ask for my name or show any further interest.

Days later, we had another encounter where he looked at me intensely but quickly turned away when I noticed. I consulted my friends, who said he likes me but thinks I was rude for leaving abruptly on the previous occasion. I didn't mean to be impolite; I simply had to go and he didn't say anything.

In the weeks that followed, I made efforts to approach him and make him feel welcome. Seeing him at the train station brightened my day, and I noticed him stealing glances when I wasn't looking. However, he never attempted to sit next to me or initiate a conversation, likely because of my own shyness and fear of rejection.

I seek your opinions on what I should do. Is he genuinely interested, or am I misinterpreting his actions? Despite his lack of overt interest, I find it hard to let go. I want clarity, whether it's getting to know him or having him express disinterest.

Initially, my friends encouraged me, but now they suggest moving on, believing that if he wanted to make a move, he would have already.
