This sounds indirect but how about focusing on making lots of guy friends first? Your ability to be well-received among guys isn't always so different from girls, and making lots of guy friends also tends to give you connections to social events where you meet girls.

That said, don't be a tag-along. If you look like the ultimate follower in your social group, you will ward off women like the plague. Lead a bit and even invite people to your own events, like even a modest home party. Then talk to everybody; guys and girls.

Also work. Do you get along with people at your workplace? Or are you kind of quiet and reserved one who barely talks to anybody? If latter case, work on that! If you develop people skills, that will help everything. You will get invited to more places, get more dates, find it easier to turn acquaintances into strangers and ultimately friends, get promotions, etc.
