I went on a date with someone who has been crushing on me for years and then ghosted me?

I always avoided him because he was basically eating me up with his eyes. After 4 years of this going on we went on a date and had a good time together. He asked two times if I want to see him again and asked me to text him. I did after some days and he told me he can’t because he got sick. After that I never heard of him again. Does anyone know/ have an idea why someone acts like this? I
