When a guy tells you he needs to take a step back from dating and it’s not you, but him. What is he really trying to say?

It very well could be him, but if he doesn't want to talk about it, you'll never know. Could be that he doesn't want to say it's anything about you for fear that you'll be hurt, so he tells you a white lie that it's him. Or, he could be realizing that you're too good for him and he doesn't want to appear to be the asshole in the relationship so he doesn't want to go any further, making it technically him. Or he knows that you're not a match, so to keep the peace, says it's him. Who knows unless he talks. I would be glad that he ends it before it begins to even really care if this is how he's going to be about it, whether it's actually you OR him.
