Had a small argument with my boyfriend over washing his underwear?

My boyfriend has gone away on a trip. Before he left I teasingly asked him how many pairs of underwear he’d take and how often he’d wash them.

So he went on the trip. It’s been a few days in and I teasingly asked if he’d washed his underwear yet. It was not meant to be offensive, just banter. He got really mad at me and told me to stop being mean. He said he won’t answer the question.

Was I out of order? Should I apologise?

Were you out of order? Not really. Should you apologize? Probably- not for asking that, but for bothering him. It's not something to make a big deal out of; a simple "Hey, look, I'm sorry about what I said last time we talked; I didn't mean to upset you", and let the matter drop.

Most likely, you caught him at a tense moment, where impatience flared out in a stupid way, or in a place where talking about underwear would been awkward with people who might've overheard his side of the conversation. He'll probably accept it graciously and let it go, or even say he's sorry he reacted so strongly, too.

On a purely abstract level, it was dumb of him to flare up, and not calling him on it feels dishonest, like you're pretending otherwise. But he's not a stranger; he's your boyfriend, and part of being in a relationship is giving your partner's feelings a higher priority than you would other people's. Now, if this were a more serious issue, holding his feet to the fire might be more reasonable, but it's not- so it's best to let it go.
