What's the difference between a man who compliments you because he is serious about you or just want to have fun?

I keep hearing the same compliments from a lot of men. I still can't get the difference if they mean it and want to date me for who I am.
Not because they just want sex

I don't think compliments are the the thing you should be looking out for.

If I start to like someone I just tell them directly, but I understand that's generally not how it works. If he pays attention and remembers your likes/dislikes is generally a good sign. If I start to like someone I literally keep notes on my phone about that so I can consistently surprise them or give at any moment. Also if you can tell despite their schedule/life that they are making an effort to make time/energy/space for you that's usually a good sign.
