If her name is Carlotta, then she may be either of Italian or Spanish/South American origin. In those languages, "going out with someone" may have a totally different meaning than in English. In Spanish, one could translate with "salir con alguien" that can also mean exiting with someone. The exact meaning in Italian "uscire con qualcuno" is identical and does not have to mean dating at all.
