Everyone seems to ship us and the other day he brought a girl to our restaurant looking very fancy (she apparently has a boyfriend), but while I was definitely jealous looking at him he seemed to look at me way too much. And hugged her right in front of me.

I just don't want to get emotionally closer than I already have, people ship us, and call me his girlfriend all the time without him being bothered anymore. Which bothers me

Here's what I'd do - next time you're chatting real late just the two of you, casually be like "alright, I basically know your whole life story now except who you root for on Saturdays. Spill the beans before I lose sleep over this!"

Say it lighthearted, but look him dead in the eye on FaceTime or whatever so he knows you're really asking. His reaction will say it all - if he laughs and tells you, bonus! If he gets all shy and avoids the question, well then you definitely know there's feelings there for sure.
