Because they could live under the rule of Consumerism, aka people are goods on a market, see @JSkye. Also because their personal philosophy of life, in fact internal psychology, would lead them to treat you, by default, as a foe, see @ProbablyClueless. And because, no offense meant, you could be part of the problem, without realizing it at all.

I was talking to a guy who completely blocked me yesterday because I went out of the house and forgot my phone at home. Lived halfway across the world and I didn't respond fast enough.

Me, I would rather talk things out--but if I am meeting someone new and things like that happen or there are radical differences in morals, I don't invest my time.

My guess is projection and convenience.

The person is ready to believe the worst shit about others because they know they aren't a saint themselves. And it's convenient for them to believe the worst of other people because it minimizes the risk they have to take. It's easier to align with the group than it is to take a stand.
