I have always treated them the same way except for some closeness and intimacy with my exes. This has always been a problem with my exes.

They certainly should. Friends are just friends. Your girlfriend is your romantic partner. There's a big difference and your girlfriend should always be the priority over friends. Especially female friends.

Of course. On the surface it might seem like there's no difference. Because a man has to maintain a chivalric code. But respect is NOT the same as trust. His partner has earned his trust to go along with respect. While his friends only recieve his respect relative to their gender.

The different degrees of closeness mean that the expectations and distinguishing features of the relationship change as well. A girlfriend or wife would be reasonable to expect that I'm going to treat her better than I would treat a platonic friend.
