Yes there is messaging feature on GAG. However, I am not sure about the app version though. It is available in the browser version

This app does have private messaging but you and the other person need to follow eachothers profile before you can do that so that's kinda weird

Yes you can direct message other people depending on both of your settings you may have to both follow each other to direct or private message.
