Be genuinely pleasant and supportive to be around. Express basic appreciation for my role in her life. My significant other shouldn't have me wondering whether there's any doubt or confusion about whether she thinks I add value to her life.

That's very sweet. Looking around me on any given day, however, I don't think that's what most men want from women. I know lots of honest direct women who guys wouldn't ever admit to wanting to be with... they call those girls "intimidating" and shut things down immediately.
@DishLady That's very true! Although, a lot of women also confuse directness with being rude. There are ways to directly say what you need to say without being unpleasant about it. A lot of women simply don't know how to do it.

Yes, of course. I hear you. For example, I'm very direct, but there's a gal in my circle who comes up and grills people and is very sharp/abrupt with the people she speaks to. We're both being honest and direct, but one of us is always approached by people and the other is always avoided.
An honest open person that can be up front no matter what the topic... better to hear it than to find out the hard way and best to be able to discuss things an not be judged and decide together the solution
