Am I crazy or is he hiding something?

I've been talking to a guy for almost 5 months now and we haven't met in person yet, as everytime we are scheduled to do so, he will not confirm the plans in the days leading up to the event and communication will become non existent on his end, and then will cancel at the very last second there's always something come up (someone is sick or a has a robbery happen, some stories are getting a bit unbelieveable) but every other weekend he is perfectly fine to hangout with his "friends and parents" and attend football and events. This guy talks about a future and kids with me, but when it comes time to meet he goes weird. Am I crazy to think he's hiding something? This is the final straw he has ignored me completely and hasn't caught up so i will be ending this friendship as I am not wasting my energy and time for one sided effort, but I'm so confused as I've never in my life had a man be so avoidant to meet and spend time with me or communicate with me. I've had men travel partway to see me, and compromise to meet me for my comfort/safety, so his actions baffle me and I don't understand why someone would lead someone on like this either, like what is the purpose?
