Why do people spend so much time on their socials when at least 80% of profiles are just bots?

Speak for yourself. I quit social media many years ago, except for YouTube and some message boards for music discussions. I don't know ANYONE who uses social media these days, apart from the odd Facebook page to share photos with family and friends.

I think a lot of people are lonely and want connection they can't get anymore.

Maybe they struggle to connect to people IRL for whatever reason so online is their next choice
