Hi everyone!
I'm a local Thailand woman and had an experience that honestly left me a little stunned, and I wanted to get some perspectives from people who might know more.
I’m a pretty average-looking straight woman — nothing influencer-level or super flashy — and I’ve never really had a ton of matches on dating apps back home.
Last night, out of curiosity (and a bit of boredom), I signed up for Higo: Local Meet Global (heard from my female friend), which I heard is a travel dating app that helps you connect with people nearby — not just for dating, but also for making friends or meeting travel buddies. Within 12 hours, I had over 100 likes and messages from men (they are coming from all around the world, literally). It completely blew my mind.
- Here’s where I’m torn:
I was super clear in my profile that I’m not looking for hookups, paid companionship, or anything casual. - I’m genuinely open to meaningful connections, whether romantic or just good conversations. But now I’m wondering — is this sudden flood of attention real, or is something else going on?
I have a few questions I’m hoping someone here can help with:
1. Are men (or men using Higo here) generally this enthusiastic about Thai/Asian women?
2. Could it be that being a local is the main factor? Or is Higo sometimes used more for transactional/causual/short-term relationships, even if that’s not obvious upfront?
3. How can I tell who’s being genuine vs. who might have different intentions?
4. Would it be better to explore connections offline rather than relying too much on the app? Though I kind of want to have a foreigner boyfriend (I love explore cultures).
I’m not here to make judgments — I totally respect the different dating cultures in each country. I just want to be clear on what I might be stepping into, and avoid any awkward misunderstandings.
If anyone has experience using Higo in Thailand (especially as a woman), or any tips on how to navigate it well, I’d love your thoughts!
