Should I message him?

A guy I served at work today asked for my number, and now I’m really regretting turning him down. Would it be inappropriate for me to message him?


I work in retail, and while I was serving him I asked if he wanted to sign up for our store membership. He said yes, so he verbally gave me his phone number and email and I entered them into the system.

Right after giving me his number, he said something like, “Well, now that you have my number, could I get yours?”

I was caught completely off guard because there were other customers around and my manager was nearby. I got flustered and asked how old he was. He said 27, and I told him I’m 30 and that he was a bit young for me.

Almost immediately afterwards I regretted it. He was cute and seemed really nice. Thinking about it now, 27 and 30 really isn’t an age difference I care about. I think I just panicked and said that because I wasn’t expecting to be asked out while I was working.

Now I really want to message him, especially because he clearly wanted to exchange numbers with me. But the problem is that I only have his number because he gave it to me for the store membership.

Considering he immediately acknowledged that I had his number and asked for mine, would it be okay to text him and explain that he caught me off guard and I’d actually like to get to know him? Or would using the number he provided for the store membership still be crossing a privacy/professional boundary?

Would you message him, or leave it and hope he comes back into the store?
