My modeling agency wants me to cut my hair. How do I professionally tell them I don’t want to?

I just got signed. My initial shoot is $500, they are not providing a hair and make up artist, I have to bring my own clothes, and then the book will cost another $400. I really have unique hair that is long and beautiful and I don’t want to cut it yet. They said it’s too long for the market. But I think it could make me stand out and that this should be my choice because it’s my body.

It depends on how much you are willing to take a gamble. There are plenty of unique upcoming models who refused to change or be defined by what is desirable, popular, etc, and in turn, waited for an opportunity where they can be themselves, and the wait paid off. But these stories are far and few between, unfortunately. That is a very tough industry, and by not cutting your hair you could potentially miss a big opportunity. I completely agree with your body, your choice, but too many agencies will essentially tell you that if you don’t like it, then you’re not a good fit, and bring in one of the other hundreds of models who would gladly cut their hair. So like I said, the risk is yours to take or not.
