What is the difference between being laid off and getting fired?

Being fired means you pissed someone off and have a bad reference and are not welcome back.
Being laid off means they have run out of work or funds and had to let people go.
"Fired" means you did something stupid/illegal and were let go.
Whereas "laid off" means you have little say in the matter.

Being fired means you no longer have a job there period.
Being laid off means you still have a job there, they just don't have any work for you right now and you can collect unemployment.
Sometimes even if you are fired you might be able to collect unemployment.
When I worked in road construction, heavy equipment we were laid off in December, too cold, frozen ground and snow to work, and usually mid April we would get called back in.
So I still had my job, we just were not able to work because of the weather.
Hope that helps.
Generally fired means it's your fault, they got rid of you for being a bad employee. Laid off is more like they had nothing for you to do, they ran out out of enough work to keep paying all the employees so through no fault of your own that can't afford to keep you around.
Also laid off you can collect unemployment, I don't think you get unemployment from being fired.
One is you did nothing wrong - Laid off
the other is you did something wrong - Fired
With laid off it can be a multitude of business reasons, from the company does not have enough work, to your team is no longer required, to individuals are no longer needed.
Usually laid off is redundancy and is a cost cutting measure by the company to reduce their salaried head count.
Laid off is being let go due to items beyond your control: (say) budget cuts or downsizing.
Being fired is being dismissed cause: absenteeism, habitually late (tardy), theft, willful destruction of company property, insubordination... the list can run for pages.
Employees who are laid off can collect unemployment insurance while those dismissed for cause (fired) generally cannot.
Getting laid off is when the company you are working for has a slow period and terminates people that are not needed. Or else th company goes out of business and everyone gets laid off.
Gettin fired is termination for due cause. You screwed up somehow or pissed off the wrong person
Laid off is the position is going away; fired is just you are.
Being laid off - Your job lays people off cause they fail to have money to pay them
Being Fired - Means you did bad on the job so they fired you
Laid off is SUPPOSED to mean that you're let got temporarily and you WILL be called back, eventually. Fired means, you don't work there anymore, ever again.
Laid off means that you're still technically an employee and they can call you back if/when work becomes available.
Lay off is basically when a company dismisses you, because they can't afford to pay you, and it's usually temporary.
Fired is when you get dismissed for not doing your job properly.
Laid off indicates that your job is eliminated or your salary can't be afforded any longer. Fired means your job performance was poor or you broke company policy.
Not much beyond the fact if you're laid off there is a chance they will call you back. In either case you're entitled to unemployment.
One is your fault, the other is the company downsizing.
being laid off, they do not have enough work for you, but you might be called back, when fired you are gone
Layoff when you are not required and fired, is when you went out of rules or violation of discipline
Laid off as usually when they don't have enough work for you
No difference when it's over
