Being a NURSE. God love nurses! They are doing God's work. It takes a special type of person to go to work everyday and be on the top of thier game. To always have thier heart engaged everyday in what they do. And to face all that suffering with a smile and an upbeat attitude. You nurses really do make a difference in this world. I wish I could do that job but I KNOW I couldn't. It would eat me alive.

It eats nurses alive. It’s a completely thankless profession with nightmarish hours and working conditions that would be illegal in nearly any other occupation. Most of us are doing everything we can to make it through a shift without pissing on ourselves because we are too busy to go to the bathroom. It’s called having a “12 hour bladder” in the industry—because 12 hour shifts are the norm. Many nurses break down after their shifts from the stress and use alcohol and drugs to cope. I’ve had nurses tell me they just sit in their car and cry in the parking lot after work. I myself absolutely hate nursing and wish I had never gone to school for it—and I’m more highly educated than many nurses. It just drains every little thing out of you. On your days off you just sleep to recover. I ended up having terrible anxiety, nausea, and a panic attack before going into work, completely sick with dread for the hell that the next 12+ hours would bring. Would anyone code? Would that guy with profound dementia who keeps wanting to roll out of bed and tear his IV out have to be restrained, again? Will a psych patient flip out and I get called to be security and tackle his ass? Will a 600 pound patient come in the door and I get tasked with helping to move him?

It’s not the blood and piss and shit and vomit that gets to you after a while. I’ve literally had my finger in a quadriplegic’s ass who was in a bad motorcycle accident to help stimulate his colon so his paralyzed gut would actually shit. Amputations? Taken care of lots of them. How many times have I stuck a catheter up someone’s dick to drain their purulent piss out of their infected bladder, I couldn’t say. None of it makes me feel any better. I’ve had people tell me that I’m a good nurse but I don’t believe it. Besides, I don’t want a compliment or thanks. I want a lunch break—and an uninterrupted one at that. I don’t want to literally beg for extra staff to keep a patient safe because administrators love to run a unit on a skeleton crew. And GODDAMN if you EVER have an extra person and think to yourself, “Holy shit, we actually have staff? It may be a good night!” they get yanked and reassigned to another unit.
